From small fishing village to major tourism hub, Oistins has had a major historical impact on Barbados. This is its story.

Fishing is historically one of the oldest professions in the Barbadian landscape. However, it is also dangerous, with lives at risk daily.

It is estimated that between 1944 and 1954 a total of 104 fishermen lost their lives at sea. In 1955, Hurricane Janet caused extensive damage within the Oistins community, badly disrupting the fishing industry. Recently, in 2024, another hurricane, Beryl, again decimated the industry, causing thousands of dollars of damage to invaluable fishing boats.

Oistins is one of four towns in Barbados, and is principally known as a fishing community, but has also become a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. Fisherfolk before and immediately after Hurricane Janet have made outstanding contributions to the industry, often without credit. Their names and contributions, if not documented, would be lost to future generations.
